Editor’s Letter: 2021 Reflect

I established Pedestrian Space at the beginning of this year. I originally founded the site as a digital space to explore the benefits and challenges of pedestrianization initiatives via literature, research, media coverage and interviews.

While I have been doing that over the course of the past year, the site has also evolved to be much more broadly about the various dimensions of walkability and its central role in sustainable urban development as well as exploring the social and psychological dimensions of car dependence on both an individual and societal level.

I’ve been a busy stay at home mom this past year as well and haven’t been participating in webinars or presenting as much as I would be inclined to but am grateful for a few of the opportunities I’ve had – my first time being interviewed for a podcast (Women in Urbanism), first time being on a panel talk (Citizenship Day at La Jolla Country Day School) and first time presenting in a forum (Urbanism Next).

As we approach the turn of the year, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to further develop the platform with primary focus on its media, advocacy and research DNA.

I’m excited and inspired by connections made thus far and discussions about collaboration with people of different generations, expertise and backgrounds.

I look forward to continuing to develop ‘Pedestrian Space’ as the global resource it was established to be.
