As part of the Pedestrian Space Global URBAN HEAT Media Lab and network in development, we are recording our conversations with incoming collaborators around the world as well as students interested in pursuing academic internships related to the project.
As part of that, we met with Niger-based Hamissou Saminou, a PhD Student in Climate Change and Human Habitat at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria. His work examines how migration-driven urbanization and land-use and land-cover change influence urban heat island effects in Lagos, Nigeria, and Niamey, Niger.
Hamissou joins the Global URBAN HEAT Media Lab pilot program and network to enhance his interdisciplinary knowledge on issues of urban heat and also to share a West African experience on urban heat, as African cities are among the warmest regions in the world, and Africa itself one of the rapidly urbanizing continents in the world with intensifying rural-to-urban migration due to droughts, desertification, and climate change.
