Dark winter days are upon us here in Warsaw which fits the introverted phase of organization and analysis of fieldwork data I am moving into as well as writing.
I have an extensive set of literature to reference and have most recently been examining my notes from Janette Sadik-Khan and Seth Solomonow’s book ‘Streetfight: Handbook For An Urban Revolution’.
In describing multiple and specific avenues and streets in different boroughs of NYC, Sadik-Khan and Solomonow note that ‘…these in-between places are a stage for New Yorkers, the urban filament where people sense and connect to the city’s energy’.
The quote transported me to this scene that I photographed during Car-Free Sunday in Brussels last year, where I was visiting for a project with Mobilise VUB.
Car-Free Sunday, a long-running tradition in Belgium’s capital during European Mobility Week, was exhilarating for me to experience. Everywhere, scenes of people using the streets and sidewalks for motion, leisure, socializing, eating, playing, and more.
