Neighborhood Morning at the Market

I’ve only been in my new city of residence for a little under 3 months and already experience the everyday social vibrancy of neighborhood life that I so greatly value.

I’ve experienced it periodically in different communities, but not everywhere I’ve lived.

This particular move came with a lot of commitment (and potential risk). To settle into life and experience such a quickly developing ‘neighborhood vibe’ is genuinely very special to me.

I walked over to our local ‘market’ this morning (a collection of dozens of vendors, small grocers and fresh produce). One of the people working at my favourite grocer there nodded as I walked by ~ ‘Dzień dobry,’ we both nodded to each other, with a smile.

I stopped at my favorite vegetable and fruit vendor, and the mood was pleasant and familiar. We buy fresh vegetables there multiple times a week, so faces are mutually familiar. We developed a favorite local coffee shop quickly, just a few doors down, where I enjoyed a quick cappuccino around locals relaxing during regular weekly coffee meets, before the quick walk home.

Could we experience even more neighborhood vibrancy? Absolutely. But this is a pretty nice foundational layer to the fabric.

This is absolutely a topic I pull into my urban research, reflecting on community, place attachment, quality of life, and resilience. I really love this research topic.

But, even more importantly perhaps, is being able to actually experience it in daily life.

How do you experience (or crave) social vibrancy in neighborhood life?
