“Calm Waters’

Last Summer while visiting Göteborg I passed by this artwork. I paused for several minutes to admire it and snap a few photos.

This month I learned that the piece is called ‘Calm Waters‘ and was created by the Spain based artist @creto_ums, who was a winner of Gothenburg Art 21 with this piece, and painted locally by participants of Sätt färg på.

Gothenburg Art 21 is a competition created by a project of Sätt färg på called ‘Let’s Color Gothenburg‘ which puts unemployed youth into work and aims to unite the city.

Participating youth are given training to become professional painters and the project recruits youth from districts of Gothenburg where the unemployment is high. During the education the participating youth paint in many different parts of the city including the suburbs and city center.

We had a chance to chat with the artist of this work who shared that:

“When I did this work I thought about the port and the river Göta älv and as the locals benefit from it. I wanted to convey the calm that this resource provides.”

We look forward to learning more about this great program in Göteborg which this year is celebrating its 400th anniversary!
