Book: Barcelona Superilla

Not only am I completely fascinated by ‘superilla’ after my recent first meeting with Francesco, one of the authors of ‘Barcelona Superilla’, but overall also with the culture, planning heritage, and urban spaces of Barcelona- a city I have not even been to!

Francesco and I met virtually for the first time late last week to discuss the book ‘Barcelona Superilla’, his work, and his motivation to develop this book.

The book itself is beautifully designed, rich with photography and graphics as well as chapters of diverse contributions from many key professionals involved in the project.

Superilla poses a crucial challenge not only for Barcelona but also for other cities facing common challenges such as demographic pressure, an aging population and air pollution. This book conducts an interdisciplinary analysis of the Superilla project from urban, social, and environmental perspectives, emphasising qualities and potential criticisms to guide other cities.’ -‘Barcelona Superilla’ by Francesco Cocco, Massimiliano Scaglione with images by Stefano Ferrando (Listlab publishers, Adjuntament de Barcelona)

The book, as well as speaking with Francesco, set my mind alight with interest in the governance and planning culture of this city as well as the fascinating development of Superilla.

At some point, I asked Francesco about issues of urban heat, and he noted that Superilla are conceived of as a refuge for climate change, and the idea is to develop all spaces of the city toward refuge.

So, Francesco, hopefully, one day the ‘tour’ you are giving me will be walking through various neighborhoods there!
