As of last year, the modern American city was known to have dedicated as much as one-third of its public land solely to parking. Today, Indian metropolitan cities like Bombay, Delhi, and Bangalore are not far behind in this trend owing to the steep incline in the number of vehicular purchases every year since the pandemic, making the phenomenon of parking ubiquitous in urbanized areas.
In recognition of this fact and of the opportunity cost of public land resulting from it, the (our) Parking Magazine has been curating an annual edited anthology of stories, research, reviews, and more solely based on the idea of parking.
To date, two such issues of (our) Parking Magazine have been published based in Bangalore and Panjim respectively, while a third based in Seoul, South Korea is in the works!

‘Walkability in Rome: Snapshot of a nightmare and clues for waking up’ with Francesca Chiodi of Movimento Diritti Dei Pedoni
Francesca is a medical doctor, critical walker and beginner urban cyclist based in Rome from 2005. She founded Movimento Diritti dei Pedoni, a young social media advocacy movement focusing on pedestrians’ rights, walkability, road safety and public space in Italy.
The movement is rapidly growing and expanding its multidisciplinary network, with plans to become a recognized association soon; and is aware that Rome is a tough – but also the best – laboratory to challenge current policies and cultural motonormativity from its foundations, and possibly to save and improve lives.

Learn about Malmö’s Summer Streets program with Elin Engqvist who works in traffic planning at Malmö municipality
Elin lives outside Malmö, but originally hails from Karlskrona. She has worked at the city of Malmö for a little over 10 years now and previously worked at the Swedish Transport Administration. She works as a traffic planner, with both new developments and existing urban environments. She is particularly passionate about pedestrians and cyclists and also sits on the board of The Swedish Pedestrian Association (FOT).
With regards to the Summer Streets program, Elin notes: “We have been working on the Summer Streets since 2017 and I have been involved since the beginning. We started with one street but the project has now grown to five streets and a square. It’s a popular project even if it raises a lot of emotions when you reduce the accessibility of car traffic.”
