As part of the Pedestrian Space ‘Global URBAN HEAT Media Lab’ and network in development, we are recording our conversations with incoming collaborators around the world, as well as students pursuing academic internships related to the project.
As part of that, we met with Mahkameh, an interdisciplinary urban researcher based in Tehran with interests in urban health, walkability, participation, and women’s experiences of the city.
She joins the ‘Global URBAN HEAT Media Lab’ with an interest in pairing her previous research in resilience and health with her current work on flânerie and urban experience, and shaping a research path to include urban heat, in light of increasing challenges posed by climate change.
She is also interested in how heat resilience intersects with gendered experiences of public space in Iran. For example, clothing and the social conditions surrounding women’s presence in public space can add another layer to how women experience and adapt to urban heat. Mahkameh believes this could offer an interesting perspective on urban heat that goes beyond purely climatic or infrastructural dimensions.
Lastly, she also brings interest to the network to shape awareness of ancient Iranian cooling approaches to mitigate heat.
