At Pedestrian Space, we are developing the 2027 pilot for the Sustainable Urbanism & Planetary Health’ program with a focus on the issue of Urban Heat. We are collaborating with individuals across the world for pilots that focus on place-based approaches to advocacy and awareness-building, education, research, and knowledge exchange on issues of urban heat.
As part of this pilot, we are recording our conversations with collaborators around the world. Today we spoke with Maureen, an Urban Planning Consultant and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Associate Expert based in Nairobi who is interested in collaborating on the pilot in order to raise awareness on issues related to urban heat, walkability, and related themes. She is particularly interested in how we can use climate-responsive spatial design and green infrastructure to protect pedestrian spaces from rising thermal stress in sub-Saharan African cities.
Nairobi was once called ‘The Green City Under the Sun’ and is the only city in the world with a national park, but is, like many other cities, facing increasing urbanization pressures, loss of tree canopy, and other environmental stresses. We look forward to collaborating with Maureen, centering her knowledge and expertise on issues in sub-Saharan African cities and facilitating exchange of insight with other Africa-based collaborators as well as globally as well as helping to center the crucial public engagement and awareness-building on issues of urban heat.
