As part of the Pedestrian Space ‘Global URBAN HEAT Media Lab’ and network in development, we are recording our conversations with incoming collaborators around the world, as well as students pursuing academic internships related to the project.
As part of that, we met with Christian Powell, a Master of Urban Planning student at the Department of Urban & Regional Planning at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, and a Graduate Research Assistant at the Rudy Bruner Center for Urban Excellence. Christian has been part of a project tackling urban heat island effects on streetscape corridors for New York State, which focuses on working with local municipalities to understand their needs and challenges on this issue and is soon looking to engage their residents and youth in this process. Their final end product will be a Streetscape Toolkit for Extreme Heat, detailing microclimate-sensitive design interventions, highlighting case studies, and describing means to implementation.
