Walkability is to say that we return to the roots of human development. For a city to be walkable, it would also denote that the planning body is inclusive of everyone and is equal to everyone in that community.

WHO

I’m Nancy Deborah, a mother, researcher, and an ardent life lover. My research focus is on sustainable urban mobility. The urban scenario where I live is, in most aspects, unsafe and unhealthy. Thus my dream for a safe, healthy, and inclusive neighborhood is my passion. I believe in political and policy change to make my dream come true. I am looking forward to meeting like-minded researchers and stories around the globe through the Global Walkability Correspondents Network.

WHERE

I live in Madurai, a culturally rich city in Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India. The city is one of the oldest surviving settlements and used to be famous for its urban planning. This heritage city had an excellent water supply system although there isn’t a perennial river supply. The application of gravity and the underground water table is still something that amazes me and makes me proud of this city. Even then the current status of the city and the quality of life here does not do justice to its former ways and that has been cause for concern. Deliberate and dedicated planning is crucial to restore the glory of this city and make this city truly livable as opposed to its present state.

WHY WALKABILITY

Walkability is to say that we return to the roots of human development. For a city to be walkable, it would also denote that the planning body is inclusive of everyone and is equal to everyone in that community. It simply denotes intelligence that surpasses the technological development any town can attain.

I hope this network can bring together individuals and ideas from their brilliant minds for solutions to practically implement walkability in communities around the globe.
