Introducing Film Students Max & Xi

Earlier this year we began to host our second set of Master’s students from the University of Bristol School of Arts for their Industrial Placements. Maximus Pruce and Xi Chen chose Pedestrian Space for their placements this Spring and further defined their documentary concept on a local community garden: Redcatch Community Garden.

I chose Pedestrian Space because I was particularly interested in access to good, fresh food, and the inequity some people face, which I have seen first-hand during my time living in Bristol. I’m looking forward to helping raise awareness for a Community Garden in south Bristol, which does a lot for its local community, in terms of access to food and different events for children and adults.

I chose Pedestrian Space for my industrial placement because of its commitment to raising awareness about sustainable urban mobility. Through this placement, I hope to develop compelling visual narratives that not only inform but also inspire positive change in urban mobility.

Introducing Xi

My name is Xi Chen, and I am originally from Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. I am currently based in Bristol, where I am pursuing my studies in film and media.

I am studying film at the University of Bristol, with a focus on media production and visual storytelling. What motivates me most about this field is the ability of film and digital media to shape narratives, inspire change, and bring attention to important social issues. I am particularly interested in how media can be used to explore themes of urban development, sustainability, and community engagement.

I am looking forward to producing engaging media content that highlights the importance of pedestrian-friendly spaces in Bristol. Introducing Maximus

My name is Maximus, and I’m currently studying Film & Television BA Hons at the University of Bristol. I am from a town in south Wales called Barry, but have spent the last three years living in various areas of Bristol. Some of my interests include music, nature, and–of course–film!

I decided to study Film & Television because I seldom see communities like the one I grew up in represented in media. Wales has been largely underrepresented in film and television, and I want to make a difference, and play a part in helping people relate to the characters they see on screen.

I’m also hoping to enrich my understanding of food equity and how this impacts people from marginalised communities.

When asked what are some of the aspects of Redcatch Community Garden that really interests them, the student filmmakers noted:

  • Designing for resilience and biodiversity — creating a pond with a solar-powered pump and a bug hotel
  • Food and nature project for and by disabled people — ensuring Bristol’s climate initiatives are equitable for all.
  • Being part of a pilot project for ‘Social Green Prescribing’ — exploring the positive mental impact that nature has, and how it can be used as a ‘medication’
  • Building a sensory garden as part of their pollination project
  • Nature and nurturing case study — blog post about a regular visitor of Redcatch, and how growing fruit and vegetables has helped him feel connected to his local community and how Redcatch makes everybody feel welcome
  • Workshops are held for people of every age – a place for everyone
  • There are a variety of events to give people a taste of Bristol’s nature
  • Maintainance of local ecology and species diversity
