I’ve been intensively interested in issues of urban heat and various cooling approaches since I established Pedestrian Space back in 2020.
I posted this content on a hot day in June 2021, reflecting on the care and maintenance I saw our neighborhood square and fountain (in the city we lived in at the time) receiving daily.

Seeing this regular level of care and cleaning also definitely enhanced my trust in the local authorities, as well as my trust and ability to let my own children play there (which they absolutely adored and which was also such immense cooling relief during heatwaves).
I am genuinely thrilled to be laying the foundation for the Pedestrian Space ‘Global URBAN HEAT Media Lab’ alongside a growing international network of individuals interested in participating and contributing to the Media Lab activity, centered all around issues of urban and extreme heat.
Yesterday I recorded a video sharing the story of the development of the ‘Global URBAN HEAT Media Lab’ (with some background as well about Pedestrian Space).
