My commentary piece, ‘Toilet equity in transit: barriers and best practices from metro systems worldwide’ was published recently in Cities & Health journal.
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23748834.2025.2573596
The commentary is based on preliminary research and personal observations on the issue of the prioritization (or lack thereof) of public toilets in metro systems globally, with commentary provided on the benefits that the maintenance of public toilets in metro systems can have and the role of urban governance.
The article aims to center and bring visibility to issues of toilet equity in transit systems, focusing on metro systems. Public toilets are a critical public health need and are relevant to discussions on walkability and mobility justice.
