Southern India Correspondent Amrutha Viswanath

Introducing a south India-based Correspondent Amrutha Viswanath!

In January 2022 we launched the Global Walkability Correspondents Network, as a way to build solidarity among walkability advocates around the world and continue to create media on sustainable mobility and urbanism.

We are happy to welcome Amrutha to our growing network of individuals who are passionate walkability advocates.

WHO

I am Amrutha, trained as an architect, but a lover of the urban since my childhood. I have experience as a trainee architect at CnT Architects, and I’m a core contributor at the Multilogue Collective, an urbanism non-profit based in New Delhi. Currently a graduate student of at the Centre for Urban Policy and Governance, TISS Mumbai, I am passionate about public transit, planning and street food! Apart from these, I try to take time out to indulge in music and digital art.

WHERE

I am originally from Chennai, Tamil Nadu and my current place of residence is Mumbai, Maharashtra. One of the main concerns common between these two cities is the inequitable distribution of pedestrian infrastructure and last-mile connectivity. I aim to represent the Southern region of India as a Walkability Correspondent.

WHY WALKABILITY

As I had mentioned earlier, Indian cities have immense potential to turn pedestrian-friendly – older cities and heritage towns are already built that way. However, walkability has become a luxury only the urban elite seem to afford, which is in stark contrast to the old town neighbourhoods. I want to investigate and formulate ways to equip neighbourhoods which rarely get any attention from authorities to be pedestrian friendly and accessible to all.

This is a fantastic initiative! I want to connect with like-minded professionals, both budding and established, to share resources and build greater ideas. I would like to participate through research, academia, knowledge-sharing and webinars.
