Social dimension of Public Transport

One of my favorite things about LinkedIn is the connective and inspiring dialogue it can lead to. Adam’s comments on one of my urban mobility post is a great reminder of the social dimension that public transportation use can provide, an important layer that I personally find underrepresented in the advocacy and campaigning for public transport.

“Earlier this winter, I was taking the bus downtown with my kids. While we waited at the stop, we played in the snow together and then as we rode the more circuitous route downtown, we admired all the Christmas decorations on the houses.

When we arrived, I suddenly realized that we could have just taken the car (I’d actually forgotten) and said so to my girls. They both agreed that that would have been worse because we would not have had the chance to have fun together.

Taking the bus may have been the right choice for the environment, it may have been cheaper than driving (maybe), but it irrefutably gave me the opportunity to connect with my kids. We often don’t realize what we’re missing when we drive a car for every trip.” -Adam Denley,  Advocate for active mobility and reduced car dependency
