Walpurgis Celebration (2019 vs 2021)

Remember the pandemic?

It wasn’t so long ago….

I have found myself, over the past year, increasingly compelled to reflect on experiences of the pandemic and also reflect on how it directly spotlighted areas of vulnerability.

Some of the most compelling for me relate to:
•food supply in urban areas, but also in general (survival questions and adaptation when supply-chain flow is disrupted or totally halted)
•green space, walkable urbanism, and mental health
•the many effects on wildlife and natural habitats when humans take a massive deep pause in ‚everyday’ activity
•and more……

What are some of the compelling issues the pandemic raised for you?

It being April 30th, I was transported in my memories to two different nights, 2 years apart, in the heart of a central Swedish city.

I snapped these photos in the heart of Örebro on Valborg. The ones above were photographed on April 30, 2019 (pre-pandemic) with a large ‘traditional’ celebration.

The ones below were photographed on April 30, 2019, with pandemic restrictions and no celebration that evening.

As part of my interest in not only reflecting on these issues but also ‘mining’ individual and collective memory for insights, I began a ‘Pandemic Insights’ interview series last year.

The interviews are not meant to be only what I call an ‘episodic memory extractive’ experience, but also a deep journey, a ‚slow moment’ to take a trip back to this strange, unprecedented time and reflect on it with the perspective of some distance and time passed.

The interview series is an ongoing project. If you’re interested in taking part, get in touch.
