Talking about Urban Mobility in the Classroom

February was ‘Mobility and Transportation’ month in my Conversational English classes for Grades 1-3 at a Polish bilingual school where I currently work.

Every month I set a different theme, which all our educational, creative, and media activities then center around.

This was an exciting theme for me to present to the students. This might have been one of their first encounters with an adult who is so thrilled about trams, buses, and subways!

Earlier this week, I shared the video above called ‘Railway Vehicles for Children with videos: Subways and Trains’ with my class 1 (age 7) students. They were absolutely transfixed! They were especially intrigued by the suspended railway!

The students engaged in so many activities this month about different mobility and transportation- discussing what a ferry is, thinking about subways, talking about their family car, talking about who enjoys walking or cycling, and sharing memories of plane and train rides.

As with every other month, we did multiple activities around these themes: word searches, sentence scrambles, art with vocabulary labels, writing and speaking exercises, and more.

I look forward to further developing learning for children around topics of mobility and transportation!
