Reducing Car Dependence

I established @pedestrianspace (last year) and pedestrianspace.org (this year) as platforms for media, research and advocacy on walkability and sustainable urbanism.

I am adding in ‘reduction of car dependence’ to that as the development of walkable environments and pedestrianized spaces of course calls for analysis and action on changing our car dependent habits and supporting the shift away from planning that prioritizes automobiles.

Of course I would like to see entire urban areas go car-free and greatly value looking to existing examples of city centers and neighborhoods that have successfully transitioned to extreme traffic reduction or full pedestrianization.

I realize, however, that it would likely take a global catastrophe to vastly eliminate much of the car dependency we experience today and so via these platforms I advocate for as radical and realistic reduction as possible now, in this decade.
